A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

The Ultimate Feast Pack: One Order, Crab Night Covered
The idea behind this pack is that crab night should not require a scavenger hunt. One order lands with a dozen steamed hard shell blue crabs, two crab mallets, a roll of crab paper and an iLoveCrabs pint glass: the whole kit, with no separate errands for gear that is hard to find outside Maryland anyway.
From Doorstep to Table in Minutes
The crabs hit our steamer the day they ship and travel cold in an insulated cooler with gel packs or dry ice. If they arrive chilled through, a few minutes over a steaming pot restores them to full temperature; if they arrive merely cold, plenty of Chesapeake hands will tell you a cold picked crab is its own quiet pleasure. Either way, dinner is closer than whatever you had planned.
No Occasion Necessary
A dozen hard shells with two mallets is built for a pair of pickers with an evening to spend. This is the order people put on repeat, not for birthdays or holidays, but for the midweek moment when the craving arrives and the only acceptable answer is a covered table and a pile of shells. Because everything needed rides in the one box, the distance from craving to cracking is exactly one delivery, and the pint glass means even the drink is provisioned.
When Word Gets Out
And word does get out. When the neighbors start timing their visits to your deliveries, move up to the 30-count Maryland blue crab feast and skim our crab feast hosting walkthrough before they arrive. Until then, the Ultimate Feast Pack keeps the ritual simple: open, cover, crack.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
Are your hardshell blue crabs frozen?
Our hard-shell crabs are steamed to order on the day they ship and packed cold for delivery. Dry ice used on some routes can partially or fully freeze crabs in transit without changing the product that was prepared.
How much is shipping?
Shipping options and cost are calculated at checkout for the product, destination and requested delivery date. Eligible perishable orders may offer overnight or 2-day service, and select packages include standard shipping in the listed price.
Do you send crab paper with the orders?
Unless specified in the product description, crab paper and mallets are not included and can be purchased separately along with our other popular accessories.
