A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

The 6¼–7 Inch Blue Crab Feast: As Big as Our Feasts Get
At 6¼–7 in point to point, these are the crabs that make people stop mid-sentence when the pile hits the paper. Two dozen of them arrive steamed, with a roll of HHC crab paper and two engraved iLoveCrabs mallets, a feast built around crabs so large the accessories politely stay out of the way.
Why Size Is the Whole Story Here
A crab pushing 7 in has claws genuinely worth the mallet work and back chambers that give up broad, unbroken lumps, the kind of pieces you rarely see outside a picking house. Every crab takes longer to finish and gives back more for the effort, which is exactly the pace a crab feast is supposed to run at. Set one of these beside an ordinary restaurant crab and the difference is not subtle; it is the difference between a snack and a course.
Five Stars From People Who Know Better
The reviews on this feast sit at a perfect five, and they read like homecoming letters: Chesapeake natives who moved away and finally found crabs worth shipping, a midwinter order praised for tasting like summertime, gifts that turned the recipients into customers of their own.
Seating the Big-Crab Table
Two dozen at this grade will hold four hungry pickers for an entire evening; if you count heads and come up short, the 30 Maryland blue crab feast brings numbers to go with the size. The crabs are steamed to order and ride cold in an insulated cooler (dry ice on two-day trips, quick re-steam on arrival), so all that is left is the table itself. Our advice on hosting a crab feast worth remembering handles that part.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
How are blue crabs measured?
Maryland blue crabs are measured point to point across the shell. Our sizes range from #2 males at 5–5½ in up to 7+ in heavyweights.
Can I freeze my blue crabs after receiving?
We do not recommend freezing steamed hardshell crabs, freezing makes the meat tough and chewy. Instead, pick the crabs first and freeze just the crab meat.
How much is shipping?
Shipping options and cost are calculated at checkout for the product, destination and requested delivery date. Eligible perishable orders may offer overnight or 2-day service, and select packages include standard shipping in the listed price.
