A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

Super Premium Feast: Two Dozen Crabs, Every One Over 6 in
The difference between a 5½ in crab and a six-plus-inch crab is not ½ in of shell; it is what is inside. Bigger crabs carry noticeably more meat per pick: fatter claws, deeper back chambers, lumps that come out whole instead of in flakes. This feast sends two dozen of them, steamed, alongside a roll of HHC crab paper, two engraved mallets and an iLoveCrabs pint glass.
Fewer Crabs Per Person, Same Full Table
Because each crab yields more, two dozen at this grade satisfies a table that might otherwise want thirty smaller ones: call it four to six pickers depending on appetite and what else is served. For a genuine crowd, the 30-crab feast adds raw numbers; this one adds heft per crab. The pint glass earns its keep too: big crabs run the evening long, and the person who ordered deserves a cold drink that stays within reach of a seasoned hand.
Premium Against Super Premium
Our premium two-dozen feast runs 5–6 in; the super premium starts where that one tops out. Same steamer, same seasoning; the only variable is how much crab comes out of every shell. If your crowd includes serious pickers who judge a feast by the weight of a claw in the hand, this is the grade they will still be talking about next summer.
The Feast, Handled End to End
Crabs go into the steamer the day your order ships and travel in a cold-packed insulated cooler, with dry ice on two-day routes; partial freezing on arrival is routine, not a problem, and a short re-steam sets it right. For the full game plan from table covering to final shell sweep, read our crab feast hosting guide, then let the mallets do the talking.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
How are blue crabs measured?
Maryland blue crabs are measured point to point across the shell. Our sizes range from #2 males at 5–5½ in up to 7+ in heavyweights.
Can I freeze my blue crabs after receiving?
We do not recommend freezing steamed hardshell crabs, freezing makes the meat tough and chewy. Instead, pick the crabs first and freeze just the crab meat.
Do you send crab paper with the orders?
Unless specified in the product description, crab paper and mallets are not included and can be purchased separately along with our other popular accessories.
