Growing Through Molting
Blue crabs usually live for three to four years and can molt as many as 25 times while growing. Their hard outer shell cannot expand, so it must be shed and replaced.
A blue crab grows by forming a larger, soft shell beneath its old one and then shedding the old shell. The new shell expands before it hardens, allowing the crab to increase in size.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.

A Full Bushel of Premium Blue Crabs, 5½–6½ in
Some gatherings cannot be fed by the dozen. The full bushel is how Maryland handles a family reunion, a graduation cookout, or a backyard suddenly full of neighbors: one big, steaming delivery of premium crabs meant to anchor the whole event.
What Premium Means in This Box
Every crab in this bushel falls between 5½ and 6½ in, a range that spans our medium and large male grades. That spread keeps the table interesting: quicker crabs for the casual pickers, heftier ones for the people who came to work. It is the format we point event planners toward when the head count climbs past what dozens can cover.
One Big Pot, One Big Cooler
The bushel is steamed after your order comes in and packed cold for travel: insulated cooler, gel packs, and dry ice on any two-day route. Crabs arriving partly frozen is a normal part of shipping cold; give them a short steam over shallow water and serve them hot in waves, the way a feast is meant to flow.
If you would rather compose your own spread crab by crab, our large female blue crabs are a strong sweet-meat foundation to build from. And before you set the date, skim our guide to Maryland hard shell crab season so the bay's calendar works in your favor. Then order the bushel and tell everyone to come hungry.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
Are your hardshell blue crabs frozen?
Our hard-shell crabs are steamed to order on the day they ship and packed cold for delivery. Dry ice used on some routes can partially or fully freeze crabs in transit without changing the product that was prepared.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
Do you have Maryland crabs available all year?
Yes. Maryland's natural season runs from early April into late November and December; outside that window we source blue crabs from the Carolinas or Louisiana. The crabs are steamed to order on the day they ship and packed cold for delivery; dry ice used on some routes can partially or fully freeze them in transit.
What seasoning do you use on the crabs?
Our traditional crab seasoning is a proprietary blend of spices with a flavor similar to JO Spice or Old Bay seasonings.
