Brown Paper, the Only Tablecloth a Crab Feast Needs

Nobody sets steamed crabs on bare wood, and nobody who has tried a cloth tablecloth under them uses one twice. Crabs come to the table hot, seasoned, and dripping, and over the next two hours that table collects shells, claw tips, and a fine red dust of spice. A roll of crab paper is how Maryland has handled that mess for generations.

From First Crab to Last Shell

Unroll a length down the table before the pot is emptied, weigh down the corners if the evening is breezy, and let everyone pick straight onto the surface. There are no plates to clear and no serving dishes to wash. The pile in the middle of the table is the meal, and the paper underneath is quietly doing all the work.

Cleanup in One Motion

When the last claw is cracked, gather the corners toward the middle and the whole evening, shells and napkins and spent lemon halves, folds into a single bundle for the trash can. The table underneath looks the way it did before the feast started.
