A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

The Premium Feast People Order for Milestones
Read through the feedback on this feast and a pattern shows up fast: a 60th birthday in West Virginia, a Father's Day table, a special occasion saved by a cooler arriving right on time. It carries a perfect 5.0 rating, and the reason is simple: two dozen premium Maryland blue crabs in the 5½–6½ in range, steamed only after you order, with a roll of HHC crab paper and two engraved iLoveCrabs mallets so the honoree has to supply nothing but appetite.
A grade with useful range
The 5½–6½ in premium span means your bushel-mates aren't clones. You'll pull solid mid-size crabs that are quick, satisfying work alongside bigger ones that reward a slower pick, and that mix keeps a table interesting from the first crab to the twenty-fourth. All of them come out of the steamer under the same traditional seasoning coat that reviewers keep mentioning by name, and one delighted customer even reported a couple of extra crabs tucked into the box.
Why it works as a gift
A crab feast is one of the few presents that is also an event. Ship this to a birthday, a retirement or a homesick Marylander and you've sent the food, the tools and the afternoon all at once: the paper goes down, the mallets come out, and the party runs itself. No wrapping required, just a heads-up so someone's home for the cooler.
Scaling up the celebration
For a crowd that will blow through twenty-four, step up to the thirty-crab feast with four mallets. And before the big day, skim our advice on putting together a seafood gathering, then let the steamer do the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
How long will my steamed blue crabs stay fresh?
Keep them refrigerated and enjoy your crabs within 2 to 3 days.
Can I freeze my blue crabs after receiving?
We do not recommend freezing steamed hardshell crabs, freezing makes the meat tough and chewy. Instead, pick the crabs first and freeze just the crab meat.
How much is shipping?
Shipping options and cost are calculated at checkout for the product, destination and requested delivery date. Eligible perishable orders may offer overnight or 2-day service, and select packages include standard shipping in the listed price.
