A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

Two Dozen Premium Blues: the Feast That Feeds the Whole Porch
One dozen crabs makes a dinner; two dozen makes an event. This longtime customer favorite stacks twenty-four steamed blue crabs, 5–6 in point to point, on top of the full table setup: HHC crab paper to cover the surface, two engraved mallets to pass around, and a pint glass for the host who did the ordering. Each crab in the batch is measured across the top shell, point to point, so the two dozen you unpack match the two dozen you had in mind.
How Far Twenty-Four Crabs Go
Seasoned pickers can put away a half dozen each without noticing; newcomers slow to about three while they learn their way to the backfin. Figure this feast comfortably seats four crab-hungry adults, or five to six once corn, slaw and hushpuppies share the table. If the guest list keeps growing on you, step up to the 30-crab feast with four mallets instead.
Running the Table
Paper goes down first, crabs get poured straight onto it, and shells pile where they fall; cleanup at the end is one big roll-and-toss. Put out a bowl of vinegar for the traditionalists, melted butter for everyone else, and let the paper handle the housekeeping. First time hosting? Our guide to hosting a memorable Maryland crab feast walks through timing, sides and setup so you spend the evening picking instead of fussing.
From Our Steamer to Your Address
Every order is steamed fresh when it ships and travels cold in an insulated cooler; two-day shipments ride on dry ice and can show up partly frozen, ready for a quick pass over steam before serving. Two dozen premium blues with the gear already included; the hard part is deciding who makes the cut for a seat.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
How long will my steamed blue crabs stay fresh?
Keep them refrigerated and enjoy your crabs within 2 to 3 days.
Can I freeze my blue crabs after receiving?
We do not recommend freezing steamed hardshell crabs, freezing makes the meat tough and chewy. Instead, pick the crabs first and freeze just the crab meat.
Do you send crab paper with the orders?
Unless specified in the product description, crab paper and mallets are not included and can be purchased separately along with our other popular accessories.
