Why the Pieces Are So Large
Jumbo lump crab meat comes from the two large muscles that power a crab’s swimming fins. Because each crab has only two of these muscles, jumbo lump is especially prized.
Careful picking keeps these swimmer-fin muscles intact, producing the impressive whole pieces associated with jumbo lump. Their mild, sweet flavor makes them a centerpiece in premium Maryland crab cakes.

Crab Cake Bites: Jumbo Lump That Passes on a Tray
A 5+ oz crab cake is a dinner. A 1½ oz crab ball is a handshake: one or two bites of the same jumbo lump meat, sized so a guest can hold a drink in the other hand. That's the entire idea behind these: take the cake our customers plan dinners around and shrink it until it works at a cocktail hour, a tailgate or a holiday open house. No forks, no plates to bus afterward, just toothpicks and an empty tray.
Party Math, Solved
Because the bites come frozen in several quantities, you can scale the tray to the guest list instead of guessing. Cook them in batches in a skillet of hot oil, turning once until golden, then drain them and keep the finished ones warm in a low oven while the doorbell keeps ringing. A bowl of tartar sauce and a plate of lemon wedges turn the batch into a station that runs itself.
The Reaction You're Buying
These carry a 4.9-star average, and the reviews follow a pattern: hosts serving them to guests who had never tasted a real Maryland crab cake, then watching those guests rave. More than one reviewer admits the order wasn't cheap, and then says they're ordering again anyway.
When the Appetizer Steals the Show
Plenty of customers graduate from passing these on trays to plating the full-size version: the Maryland jumbo lump crab cakes at 5+ oz are the same idea grown up. Either way, the food around them matters, and our guide to five dishes to serve with crab cakes handles the supporting cast. The bites arrive frozen, packed with dry ice, and wait patiently for the next gathering.
