How a New Shell Forms
Crabs and other crustaceans grow by molting because their rigid exoskeleton cannot expand. Before molting, they reabsorb some calcium from the old shell to help build the new one.
Before shedding, a crab reabsorbs some calcium carbonate from its old shell. It then produces a new, soft shell underneath and gradually hardens it after the molt is complete.
Preparation
Preparation
Snow crab legs: steam
- Add 2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of salt to a pot and bring it to a boil.
- Place the pre-cooked crab legs and your preferred seasoning on a rack over the boiling water, then cover.
- Steam for approximately 6 to 8 minutes after the water returns to a boil.
Boil
- Fill a large saucepan halfway with cold water, bring it to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of salt and your preferred seasoning.
- Add the crab legs, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for approximately 8 minutes.
Grill
- Brush the crab legs with olive oil on all sides to prevent sticking.
- Grill at 300°F for approximately 5 minutes per side, until heated through.
Bake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and arrange the crab legs in a single layer in a shallow baking pan.
- Add approximately ⅛ inch of hot water and cover the pan with aluminum foil.
- Bake for approximately 10 to 12 minutes.

A Head-to-Head Crab Tasting, Set for Two
The Crab Lovers Feast is built like a two-seat table: two engraved iLoveCrabs mallets, two frosted iLoveCrabs pub glasses, and enough of two different crabs to argue over. A dozen premium Maryland blues at 5½–6 in go into the steamer only after you order; 3 lb of Alaskan snow crab clusters ride alongside, sweet and ready for cracking. It's dinner and a debate in one insulated cooler.
Picking versus pulling
Every table splits the same way. One of you will defend the blue crab: the seasoning, the hunt for backfin, the fact that the best bites are the ones you worked for. The other will hold up a full strand of snow crab leg meat, dunk it in butter, and rest their case. With a dozen seasoned hard shells and 3 lb of clusters, there's enough evidence on both sides to keep the argument going all night, and a mallet apiece so nobody has to wait.
The frosted glasses are not a gimmick
A crab feast without something cold within reach is a logistical error, and the two frosted pub glasses in this box exist to prevent it. They also outlast the meal; most customers tell us the glassware becomes the permanent reminder of the night the crab showdown happened. Fill them, clink them over the shell pile, and let the final verdict wait another round.
When the rematch needs a bigger table
Head-to-head tastings have a way of growing into full gatherings. When yours does, the thirty-crab blue crab feast settles the question at scale, and our notes on hosting a seafood gathering will keep the bigger event as easy as the first one. Start with the feast for two and see which crab wins.
