A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.
Raw shrimp: steaming
- Add 2 in of water to the bottom of a pot and bring it to a boil.
- Place a steaming basket in the pot and add the raw shrimp, keeping them out of the water.
- Sprinkle with Harbour House Crabs seafood seasoning and cover with a lid.
- Steam for approximately 4 to 5 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The shrimp are done when they turn from grey to pink.
- Serve with cocktail sauce. Steam times may vary.

Date Night, Maryland Style: A Dozen Large Crabs and 1 lb of Shrimp
Dinner and the entertainment arrive in the same cooler. A dozen large steamed Maryland blue crabs, 1 lb of raw jumbo Gulf shrimp, two mallets and a roll of crab paper: spread the paper across the kitchen table and the evening plans itself. No reservations, no dress code, no rushing through courses to free up the table.
Shrimp first, crabs for the long haul
Cook the shrimp your way, a quick steam with spice or a butter sauté, and let them play the opener. The crabs arrive already steamed and seasoned, so the main event needs no kitchen work at all: six large crabs apiece is a genuinely leisurely pace, the kind where conversation outlasts the pile. With a mallet at each seat, neither of you spends the night waiting, and since steamed crab is patient food, you can linger as long as the conversation holds, with no server hovering nearby with a check.
Why couples keep reordering it
This pack holds a 4.88 rating, and the reviews have a distinct flavor: repeat customers on their third order, transplanted Marylanders shipping a taste of the Eastern Shore to family stranded in far-off states, and first-time online seafood buyers surprised to find everything packed tight and fresh. It travels in an insulated cooler with dry ice, built for the distance.
Make the shrimp earn their spot
Since the crabs handle themselves, put your kitchen energy into that 1 lb of jumbo shrimp; our recipe roundup has quick preparations that turn them from garnish into a proper first course. Then wash your hands, pick up a mallet, and settle in. Some date nights are candlelit; the best ones are paper-covered.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.

Unless specified in the product description, crab paper and mallets are not included and can be purchased separately along with our other popular accessories.
How are the orders packed for shipment?
Every order is sealed inside an insulated styrofoam cooler and placed in a sturdy box for extra protection. Depending on the products, destination, transit time and season, we use ice packs and/or dry ice, and we pack orders to withstand potential shipping delays.
