Why the Pieces Are So Large
Jumbo lump crab meat comes from the two large muscles that power a crab’s swimming fins. Because each crab has only two of these muscles, jumbo lump is especially prized.
Careful picking keeps these swimmer-fin muscles intact, producing the impressive whole pieces associated with jumbo lump. Their mild, sweet flavor makes them a centerpiece in premium Maryland crab cakes.
Preparation
Preparation
Jumbo lump crab cakes: broil
- Thaw the crab cakes and place them on a broiler pan or baking sheet.
- Broil for approximately 12 to 14 minutes, until golden brown and crisp on top.
Bake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and place the thawed crab cakes on a baking sheet.
- Top each crab cake with a pad of butter or drizzle with melted butter.
- Bake for approximately 7 to 8 minutes, then broil for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown.
Sauté
- Heat oil in a large skillet over high heat until hot but not smoking.
- Add the thawed crab cakes and sauté for approximately 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Transfer to paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Raw shrimp: steaming
- Add 2 in of water to the bottom of a pot and bring it to a boil.
- Place a steaming basket in the pot and add the raw shrimp, keeping them out of the water.
- Sprinkle with Harbour House Crabs seafood seasoning and cover with a lid.
- Steam for approximately 4 to 5 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The shrimp are done when they turn from grey to pink.
- Serve with cocktail sauce. Steam times may vary.

The Seafood Dinner for Two Our Customers Keep Gifting
Look through the reviews on this dinner (it holds a 4.9-star average across nearly ninety of them) and a pattern emerges: a striking number were bought for someone else. Birthdays, anniversaries, New Year tables. It travels well as a gesture because it covers every course of a serious seafood evening: a dozen steamed hard shell crabs, two Harbour House crab cakes, ½ lb of steamed jumbo shrimp and four espresso bean brownies, with a pair of mallets for the cracking.
Pacing a three-course crab night
Start with the shrimp: already steamed, they need only a chill and a bowl of cocktail sauce while the crabs hit the table. The dozen hard shells are the long middle of the night, the stretch where conversation happens between claw cracks and nobody checks a phone with seasoned fingers. Warm the crab cakes as the picking winds down, and hold the brownies back until the shells are cleared; espresso and chocolate land differently after an hour of salty work.
More dinner than two dinners
More than one reviewer admits this dinner for two stretched further; one family reported getting three meals out of a single box. If your version of date night includes leftovers for tomorrow's lunch, that is a feature. And when the occasion grows into a party, the 30 blue crab feast with paper and mallets feeds the whole guest list, with our guide to hosting a seafood gathering worth remembering handling the logistics.
The crabs are steamed fresh to order and everything ships together in one cold-packed cooler. Some meals mark occasions; this one has a habit of becoming the occasion itself.
