A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.
Raw shrimp: steaming
- Add 2 in of water to the bottom of a pot and bring it to a boil.
- Place a steaming basket in the pot and add the raw shrimp, keeping them out of the water.
- Sprinkle with Harbour House Crabs seafood seasoning and cover with a lid.
- Steam for approximately 4 to 5 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The shrimp are done when they turn from grey to pink.
- Serve with cocktail sauce. Steam times may vary.

Half a Bushel of Crabs, 2 lb of Shrimp, One Party
This is the order you place when the guest list stops fitting around the kitchen table. A half bushel of medium Maryland blue crabs forms the mountain in the middle, 2 lb of raw jumbo Gulf shrimp fill in around it, and 1 lb of Harbour House crab seasoning, four mallets and a roll of crab paper handle the logistics. One delivery, and the host's job shrinks to boiling water and pouring drinks.
Put that 1 lb of seasoning to work
The crabs arrive seasoned from the steamer, so the big supply of seasoning is for everything else: dust the shrimp before they hit the steam pot, stir it into melted butter for dipping, salt the corn and potatoes that always end up next to a crab pile. 2 lb of raw shrimp cook in one quick batch and give the non-pickers in the crowd something to reach for while the crab people settle into their rhythm.
Setting up for a half-bushel crowd
Run the paper down the longest table you own, stage the four mallets where the serious pickers sit, and park the shrimp at the far end so traffic spreads out. A half bushel keeps a backyard's worth of people busy for a whole afternoon; this is a two-hour meal by design, not a buffet line. Our full walkthrough on how to host a Maryland crab feast covers timing, sides and cleanup in detail.
Right-sizing the order
For a somewhat smaller gathering, the 30 steamed blue crabs with paper and four mallets deliver the same kind of table in a tighter footprint. Whichever scale you pick, everything arrives packed cold in an insulated cooler, ready for the party to start on schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many crabs are in a bushel?
It depends on the size: a full bushel holds about 7 dozen small, 6 dozen medium or 5 dozen large crabs. Half bushels are also available.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
Do the shrimp come seasoned?
When ordering shrimp separately, you have the choice of raw or steamed & seasoned. Shrimp included in Dinner for Two and other crab and seafood combos come pre-steamed and seasoned.
Can I freeze my blue crabs after receiving?
We do not recommend freezing steamed hardshell crabs, freezing makes the meat tough and chewy. Instead, pick the crabs first and freeze just the crab meat.
