A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

The Large Feast: Two Dozen Crabs at 6–6½ in
The difference between a good crab feast and a great one is often about ½ ft of shell. The two dozen premium Maryland blues in this feast measure 6–6½ in point to point, the large grade, and they come with a roll of HHC crab paper and two engraved iLoveCrabs mallets so the table is set the moment the cooler opens. Every order is steamed fresh after it's placed, packed cold with gel packs or dry ice for the ride.
Fewer crabs, more meat per crab
At this size the economics of picking shift in your favor. The body chambers give up backfin in proper lumps, the claws crack open with meat worth the effort, and each crab holds your attention longer, so two dozen large crabs feed a table in a way a bigger count of smaller ones doesn't. It's the grade we point people toward when they say they want the work-to-reward ratio tilted toward reward.
What comes back in the reviews
Buyers rate this feast 4.86, and the notes tend to hit the same beats: crabs arriving fresh and well packed, and more than one story of hosts using this exact box to hand friends their first-ever crab mallet. Freshness even won over one reviewer's seafood-averse spouse, which is about as strong an endorsement as steamed crab gets.
Planning the day around it
Give yourself an unhurried afternoon and a table you don't mind covering. Our walkthrough on hosting a memorable crab feast handles the details, and if your guest list outgrows two dozen, the 30-crab feast with four mallets adds both count and cracking capacity. For a table of pickers who value size over sheer numbers, though, this is the one.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
How long will my steamed blue crabs stay fresh?
Keep them refrigerated and enjoy your crabs within 2 to 3 days.
Can I freeze my blue crabs after receiving?
We do not recommend freezing steamed hardshell crabs, freezing makes the meat tough and chewy. Instead, pick the crabs first and freeze just the crab meat.
How much is shipping?
Shipping options and cost are calculated at checkout for the product, destination and requested delivery date. Eligible perishable orders may offer overnight or 2-day service, and select packages include standard shipping in the listed price.
