A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

Twenty-Four Big Crabs and a Free Afternoon
Two dozen Maryland blue crabs in the 6–7 in class is not dinner; it's an occupation. This Daily Deal delivers them steamed and seasoned to order, with a roll of crab paper and two mallets, packed cold in an insulated cooler. Clear a table, clear a few hours, and invite the people you actually like talking to.
Built for the slow table
A pile of twenty-four large crabs sets its own pace. Nobody sprints through crabs this size; the table settles into a rhythm of cracking, picking and catching up, and the pile in the middle shrinks so gradually that the afternoon disappears with it. This is the count for a small gathering that treats the crabs as the whole plan rather than one dish among several. Set out bowls of vinegar and melted butter, stack paper towels within everyone's reach, and let the seasoning do the rest.
Large crabs change the arithmetic
Because each 6–7 in crab yields so much more than a smaller one, two dozen of them feeds a group that a lighter grade at the same count would leave hungry. Four to six unhurried pickers will find the pile keeps up with them, and the two mallets cover the claws while knives and thumbs handle the rest.
Planning notes from the crab house
Cover more table than you think you need, chill more drinks than you think you'll drink, and read our piece on pulling off a memorable crab gathering before your first time hosting. Need a higher count with more hammers in the box? The 30-crab feast with four mallets is the next rung up. Otherwise, twenty-four heavyweights await your order.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you eat Maryland Blue Crabs?
Ask a Marylander how to eat crabs and you are sure to get a variety of answers. Step-by-step instructions are included with every crab order, and our how-to guide and videos walk you through cracking and picking like a pro.
Are your hardshell blue crabs frozen?
Our hard-shell crabs are steamed to order on the day they ship and packed cold for delivery. Dry ice used on some routes can partially or fully freeze crabs in transit without changing the product that was prepared.
How many crabs should I order for my crab feast?
Depending on appetite and what else is being served, plan for 6–8 crabs per person on average, and more for heavy eaters.
What is the daily cut-off time to place an order?
Available ship dates and the current order cut-off are shown during checkout. Choose the delivery date displayed for your destination instead of relying on a fixed cut-off for every product and route.
Can I freeze my blue crabs after receiving?
We do not recommend freezing steamed hardshell crabs, freezing makes the meat tough and chewy. Instead, pick the crabs first and freeze just the crab meat.
