A Chesapeake Tradition
Maryland crab feasts are as much a social tradition as a meal. Steamed crabs are commonly served on a paper-covered table with mallets, seasoning and plenty of time for picking.
Picking crabs is intentionally unhurried. The shared table setup keeps shells contained, gives everyone room to work and turns the meal into a gathering rather than simply another seafood dinner.
Preparation
Preparation
Maryland blue crabs: steaming or re-steaming
- Add approximately 2 in of water to a large pot and place a rack or steaming basket inside to keep the crabs out of the water.
- Bring the water to a boil and wait until steam is visible before adding the crabs.
- Sprinkle the crabs with crab seasoning to taste, then cover the pot with a lid.
- For live crabs, steam for 5 to 10 minutes after steam begins escaping from under the lid. The crabs are cooked when they turn orange.
- For already-steamed crabs, follow the same method for less time and use the steam-time chart below for the quantity being reheated.
HHC Crab Seasoning ingredients: salt, spices and paprika.

One Dozen Crabs From the Top of the Size Chart
Six to 7 in is about as large as a Maryland hard shell blue crab gets, and this Daily Deal puts twelve of them on your table with a roll of crab paper and two mallets. They're steamed and seasoned only after your order comes in, then packed cold in an insulated cooler, a small-count feast built entirely from the big end of the catch.
The payoff of a 6-7 inch crab
Size changes the experience more than newcomers expect. Crabs this large carry backfin in thick, unbroken lumps, and the claws crack open to reveal meat worth the swing. Every shell you open pays out properly, so a dozen of these delivers the satisfaction of a much bigger pile of smaller crabs, with a fraction of the labor. Even the teardown is easier to learn at this size, which makes these the crabs to hand a first-timer.
Feast flavor at weeknight scale
Not every crab craving comes with a guest list. A dozen large crabs is the right measure for two or three people and an open evening: the paper goes down on the kitchen table, the mallets come out, and there's no event to organize, just crabs. It's the pack we recommend to people who want the full Maryland experience on a random Friday without committing to a bushel.
When the craving invites company
If a quiet dozen turns into a plan with friends, scale straight up to the thirty-crab feast that comes with four mallets, and borrow the game plan from our crab feast hosting article. For tonight, though, a dozen heavyweights and a hammer will do nicely.
