The flattened rear legs distinguish swimming crabs from many other crab families. Combined with their blue claws and olive-blue shell, they give the Maryland blue crab its recognizable appearance.
Those paddle legs are easy to recognize in crab artwork and are one of the details that make the species such a distinctive Chesapeake symbol.
