Prepared Near the Source
Alaskan king crab legs are generally cooked shortly after harvest, then rapidly chilled or frozen to protect their flavor and texture during transport.
King crab is already cooked when it reaches the customer, so home preparation is primarily reheating. Gentle steaming, baking or grilling warms the meat while helping it remain moist.
Preparation
Preparation
King crab legs: steam
- Add 2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of salt to a pot and bring it to a boil.
- Place the pre-cooked crab legs and your preferred seasoning on a rack over the boiling water, then cover.
- Steam for approximately 10 to 15 minutes after the water returns to a boil.
Boil
- Fill a large saucepan halfway with cold water, bring it to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of salt and your preferred seasoning.
- Add the crab legs, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for approximately 12 to 15 minutes.
Grill
- Brush the crab legs with olive oil on all sides to prevent sticking.
- Grill at 275°F for approximately 10 minutes per side.
Bake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and arrange the crab legs in a single layer in a shallow baking pan.
- Add approximately ⅛ inch of hot water and cover the pan with aluminum foil.
- Bake for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Broken King Crab Legs: The Cook's Way Into Alaska's Best
A cracked shell changes nothing about what is inside it. These are the same wild Alaskan king crab legs we sell whole (harvested from the Bering Sea and North Pacific, cooked, and frozen), except these legs broke somewhere between the boat and the box, so they come as mixed sizes and pieces. What you give up is presentation. What you get is king crab you can actually cook with.
Why Cooks Ask for the Broken Box
Because the shells are already split and the pieces vary, this is the easiest king crab to pick, which makes it the smart buy when the meat is headed into a dish rather than onto a platter. Fold it into mac and cheese, pile it onto toasted rolls, slide it into a bisque at the last minute, or scramble it into weekend eggs. King crab's dense, sweet muscle keeps its character in a recipe far better than most shellfish.
Reheating Odd-Sized Pieces
Everything in the box is precooked, so heat gently and briefly. Steam the pieces in a basket over boiling water just until warmed through. Smaller fragments finish ahead of thick sections, so pull them early rather than holding everything to one clock. Cold works just as well: picked and chilled, the meat is ready for salads and crab cocktail with zero time at the stove. Each order travels to you cold-packed in an insulated cooler with gel packs or dry ice.
Availability and Alternatives
Broken legs only exist when handling and transit create them, so this item is subject to availability; if you see it listed, that is the day to buy. When dinner calls for whole legs laid across a platter instead, go the other direction entirely with our gigantic Alaskan king crab legs.
